A transport space ship crashes on a deserted planet. The planet has 3 suns making it always day, or so the survivors think. However they soon realize that the planet is not as deserted as they first thought and they have to figure out a way to get off the planet before it is to late.

Pitch Black is the first movie in the Chronicles of Riddick series. I always though I had watched it a long time ago, but I realized that I had not. How I had missed this sci-fi gem I am not sure, but I am glad I finally saw it.

With a fairly unknown cast at release, the actors do a great job of making this into a great movie. Vin Diesel stars as Richard B. Riddick, a murderer with enhanced eyes that makes him able to see in the dark. I really liked his character in this movie in comparison to films like Fast and Furious. Even though his role is a stone cold assassin, he manages to show the audience that he is a great actor. Radha Mitchell playing Carolyn Fry is also great in her role.

What surprised me a lot about Pitch Black is the great atmosphere and sets. The colors used in the movie reflect the color of the 3 suns and gives the viewer a different experience from other sci-fi flicks. I also liked how the planet looks totally different in the dark. Special effects are also very good, the solar eclipse looked amazing, and the aliens are well designed.

I have to admit I was very positively surprised with Pitch Black, I was expecting a mediocre sci-fi movie, but in stead I got a really good one. The story works, the acting is great, and the art is very cool. It is hard to find anything to put a finger on. 9/10
